Dendrobium cuthbertsonii

Dendrobium cuthbertsonii is a high-altitude miniature species from the mountains of New Guinea, grown for oversized, jewel-coloured flowers on a plant sometimes no bigger than a thumb. Blooms can last months on a well-grown plant. This is not a tropical lowland orchid — it comes from cool, humid highland forest between 750m and 3,500m, and needs that same cool, humid, moving-air environment in cultivation.

Everything listed here is grown in the Dandenong Ranges under sheltered, humid conditions with constant airflow. Plants are established and healthy, supplied in appropriate pot sizes for the growth stage. Alongside the species we carry a range of registered cuthbertsonii hybrids (Janya, Mingle's Sapphire, mohlianum and sulawesiense crosses), bred for a little more forgiveness without relaxing the core culture requirements.

What to expect

Flowers are large relative to plant size and unusually long-lasting, in colours ranging from white through yellow, orange, red and bicolours. Plants are compact — often only a few centimetres tall — and suited to mounted or small-pot culture in a humid, sheltered spot. Hybrids are generally a little more floriferous or forgiving than the pure species, but share the same essential needs.

Care notes

Cool temperatures, high humidity, and constant airflow together are what keep this species alive — no single element is enough on its own. There is no dry winter rest; the growing medium should stay evenly moist year-round. Sustained heat above the mid-20s is the most common cause of decline.
