Delight in the enchanting beauty and sweet fragrance of Cymbidium Nut ‘H&R’, a distinctive Intermediate hybrid bridging classic Oriental elegance with modern vigour. This free-flowering clone produces masses of star-shaped blooms featuring a tawny copper colour base, dramatically striped in deep red. Its unique appearance and delightful aroma make it a charming and coveted addition for any collector.

Care Requirements

  • Light: Requires high light levels to ensure a strong upright spike and encourage prolific blooming. Filter intense midday summer sun.
  • Temperature: Cool to Intermediate (10°C – 24°C). The essential cool-down period (10°C-14°C at night) in Autumn is necessary for reliable flower initiation.
  • Watering: Maintain regular moisture during the Spring and Summer active growth phase. Allow the mix to dry slightly between waterings in the cooler months.
  • Humidity: 50% to 70%. Good air movement is vital for healthy growth and promoting the best fragrance release.
  • Potting: Use a free-draining, bark-based Cymbidium mix. The plant prefers to be contained; repotting is best done in Spring after flowering.
  • Fertilizing: Apply a balanced, weak-solution fertilizer weekly during the peak growing season. Reduce frequency drastically during Winter dormancy.

Genetic History & Provenance

  • Parentage: Cymbidium sinense x Cymbidium Red Beauty.
  • Hybridizer: Rod McLellan Co. (1990).
  • Registration: Registered with the Royal Horticultural Society.
  • Awards: Awarded a Horticultural Commendation (HCC/AOS) in 2001, recognizing its unique aesthetic and strong growth.
  • Note: Stock is offered as a single lead mericlone, guaranteeing the exact striped copper colour, unique shape, and sweet fragrance of the ‘H&R’ clone.

Flowering and Maturity Profile

  • Season: Typically flowers mid-season, from Winter through early Spring.
  • Bloom Size: Intermediate/Novelty size, approximately 5.0–7.0 cm across.
  • Coloration: Tawny copper-yellow segments with prominent deep red/maroon stripes. The lip is white/yellow with heavy red spotting.
  • Fragrance: Sweetly fragrant, characteristic of its sinense parentage.
  • Growth Habit: Compact, upright foliage producing strong, erect flower spikes.
