Botanical Profile
- Origin: Native to the cloud forests of Colombia, specifically the department of Antioquia.
- Leaves: Features the typical thin, pleated (plicate) leaves of the genus, arising in tufts from a compact rhizome. Plants typically reach about 20-25 cm (8-10 inches) in height.
- Flowers: Produces fascinating flowers with the characteristic long sepaline tails of the *Dracula* genus. Flower size can be around 12 cm (approx. 4.7 inches). While specific colour details vary, 'dark forms' are noted in cultivation, suggesting potentially deep or dramatic hues. Bloom time can occur between July and November according to some sources, though conditions greatly influence flowering.
- Growth Habit: A delightful epiphyte, naturally growing on trees within its humid forest habitat. It exhibits a clumping (caespitose) growth pattern and lacks pseudobulbs for water storage.
Care Notes
- Light: Requires shady conditions to bright indirect light (approx. 1200-2500 foot-candles). Protect carefully from any direct sunlight.
- Water: Needs consistently high moisture levels; the medium should remain damp. Depending on the setup (pot vs. basket, medium type), this might necessitate daily watering or misting. Pure water (rainwater, distilled, RO) is crucial due to sensitivity to minerals.
- Humidity: Demands very high humidity, ideally 70-80% or more. Good air circulation must be provided simultaneously to prevent fungal issues.
- Temperature: An intermediate to cool grower. It prefers temperatures generally ranging from a minimum of 11°C (52°F) at night to a maximum of 27°C (80°F) during the day, with a definite cool-down at night.
- Fertiliser: Apply fertiliser very sparingly. Use a highly diluted (e.g., quarter-strength) balanced orchid food perhaps every few weeks only during active growth phases. Flush with pure water regularly.
- Repotting: Benefits from annual repotting into a fresh, airy, yet moisture-holding medium like sphagnum moss or a fine bark mix. Mesh baskets are often preferred to allow excellent drainage and air circulation to the roots.
Extra Notes
- Growth Rate & Difficulty: Considered a challenging orchid to cultivate, requiring strict adherence to its cool, humid, and moist environmental needs. Growth is typically slow to moderate.
- Unique Characteristics: Its specific name, *severa*, hints at a 'stern' or perhaps imposing appearance, possibly reflected in its flower form or colouration.
- Cautions: Highly sensitive to water quality, low humidity, and heat. The *Dracula* genus is generally considered non-toxic to pets.
