Botanical Profile

  • Origin: Native to the high-altitude cloud forests of the Ecuadorian Andes, typically found between 2000 and 2400 metres (approx. 6560 - 7870 feet).
  • Leaves: Features the characteristic large, thin, pleated leaves typical of the genus, growing in appealing tufts from a short rhizome.
  • Flowers: Produces truly spectacular, large flowers for the genus, potentially reaching 12 x 20 cm (approx. 4.7 x 7.9 inches)! The blooms possess the signature long, dramatic sepal tails. Flower stalks can grow horizontally, slightly pendulously, or even upright, bearing 2-3 flowers that open one after another. While exact colours vary, the genus showcases a wide palette. Blooms typically last several days to a couple of weeks.
  • Growth Habit: A marvellous epiphyte, naturally growing upon moss-laden trees in its high-altitude home. It grows in clumps (caespitose) and, like its relatives, lacks pseudobulbs.

Care Notes

  • Light: Requires shady conditions with low to medium indirect light, reflecting its cloud forest origins. Shield completely from direct sunlight.
  • Water: Demands consistent moisture – the growing medium should never dry out entirely. Water thoroughly when the surface is just barely damp to the touch. Using pure water (rainwater, distilled, RO) is absolutely crucial due to its sensitivity to minerals.
  • Humidity: Extremely high humidity, upwards of 75-80%, is essential for success. Excellent air circulation must accompany high humidity to prevent fungal problems.
  • Temperature: As a high-altitude native (2000-2400m), it unequivocally prefers cool conditions. Aim for daytime temperatures below 21-24°C (70-75°F) with nighttime temperatures dropping into the low 10s°C (low 50s°F).
  • Fertiliser: Needs very minimal feeding. Apply a heavily diluted (quarter-strength) balanced orchid fertiliser sparingly, perhaps monthly during active growth. Flush the medium periodically with pure water.
  • Repotting: Frequent repotting, likely annually, into a fresh, airy yet moisture-retentive mix is recommended. Mesh pots or baskets are ideal to provide root aeration and accommodate potentially descending flower stalks.

Extra Notes

  • Growth Rate & Difficulty: Like most Draculas, cultivating D. tubeana is a significant challenge requiring precise environmental control. It's best suited for experienced growers with cool-growing conditions. (Specific growth rate not found, but likely slow).
  • Unique Characteristics: Distinguished by its exceptionally large flowers within the genus. Its name honours M. Tube, a 19th-century head gardener. Belongs to the *Dracula* subsection *Dracula*, Series *Dracula*.
  • Cautions: Highly sensitive to water impurities, low humidity, and excessive heat. Ensure stable, cool, and humid conditions. (Specific toxicity unconfirmed, standard plant/pet precautions apply).
