Coelogyne wenzelii – better known by its former name Dendrochilum wenzelii – is endemic to the Philippines, growing in mossy forest on Luzon, the Visayas and Mindoro. Narrow, sharply pointed, grassy leaves rise from slender pseudobulbs, and dense chain-like spikes of small flowers appear from the new growths. This is the orange-flowered form.

What to expect

  • Flowers: Orange flowers packed in two neat rows along an arching spike.
  • Plant: Clumping, with narrow grass-like leaves on spindle-shaped pseudobulbs.
  • Foliage: Older leaf tips commonly brown off with age. This is typical of the species, not a sign of disease.

Growing notes

  • Temperature: Intermediate and adaptable. Australian growers report it tolerating around 5°C without harm.
  • Light: Bright filtered light.
  • Water: Keep moist while in growth; it likes regular water.
  • Humidity & air: Moderate to high humidity with good air movement. Grows well potted or mounted.

About the name

Formerly Dendrochilum wenzelii. In 2021 Chase and Schuiteman merged Dendrochilum into Coelogyne based on DNA evidence. You will still see the old name on labels and in older books.
