Dendrobium Darlington Joy is an Australian native Dendrobium hybrid (cross number 5186), bred from Esme Poulton 'Tinonee' × speciosum 'Moonmere' AM/AOC. Esme Poulton 'Tinonee' is a compact kingianum-alliance hybrid; D. speciosum 'Moonmere' AM/AOC is an awarded cultivar of the rock orchid, contributing large plant stature, fragrant cream flowers, and prolific spike production. The photographs show the parent plants. Individual seedlings will vary in flower colour and form.
What to expect
- Flowering: Spring. Long spikes carrying multiple flowers, reflecting the speciosum parentage.
- Flowers: Expected cream to white, potentially with pink flush or lip markings drawing on the Esme Poulton parent. Fragrance likely. Individual plants will vary.
- Plant: Larger and more robust than a standard kingianum hybrid, reflecting the speciosum influence. Forms clumping growth over time.
Growing notes
- Temperature: Cool to intermediate. Hardy and cold-tolerant when established. A cool winter dry rest supports spring flowering.
- Light: Full sun to bright filtered light. The speciosum parentage increases light and heat tolerance.
- Water: Regular through the growing season; restrict through winter rest.
- Feeding: Balanced fertiliser through spring and summer, reduced from late autumn.
