Dendrobium (sp. aff. calamiformis 'Tully' × nugentii) × brevicauda 'GD' (Syn. Dockrillia)

This is a seedling of an unregistered, three-species Dockrillia (Dendrobium) cross: (sp. aff. calamiformis 'Tully' × nugentii) × brevicauda 'GD'. It has no registered grex name. It suits collectors who want something unusual and are comfortable with variable results.

About this plant

The seed parent is itself an unregistered hybrid. It combines sp. aff. calamiformis 'Tully', a terete-leafed form from the Tully region of far north Queensland, with Dockrillia nugentii. The 'Tully' plant is closely related to Dockrillia calamiformis but is not definitively assigned to that species. D. nugentii, the Northern Thumbnail Orchid, is a flat-leafed highland Queensland species more closely related to D. linguiforme. That pairing brings together very different leaf forms and flower characters.

The pollen parent is Dockrillia brevicauda 'GD', a George Dimos-selected clone of the rare Mt Finnigan rainforest species. With three Queensland species in the background, two of them from highland rainforest habitats, seedlings from this cross will be variable. Flower colour, form and plant habit could go in several directions.

• Culture: best grown mounted or in a basket with excellent airflow

What you'll receive

An established seedling in a 66mm pot, grown in the Dandenong Ranges. It is not yet flowering size and has not flowered. Individual plants will differ, as they do in any seedling cross.
