Dendrobium (calamiformis 'Mt Lewis' × fuliginosa 'Les') × Tweetie 'GD' (Syn. Dockrillia)

A three-species Dockrillia (Dendrobium) complex with no registered grex name, offered as seedlings. Both fuliginosa and calamiformis appear on each side of the cross, so it suits growers who want terete, pencil-type plants bred from a tight gene pool known for deep colour.

About this plant

The seed parent is an unregistered hybrid between Dockrillia calamiformis 'Mt Lewis', a terete-leafed form from the high-altitude rainforests of Mt Lewis in far north Queensland, and Dockrillia fuliginosa 'Les', a George Dimos cultivar of the species, known among collectors for passing deep, intense colour to its offspring. The pollen parent, Dockrillia Tweetie 'GD', is a registered hybrid of fuliginosum × calamiforme. Both parents come from the same group (section Rhizobium), and this cross concentrates the same gene pool on both sides. It has produced some of the most colour-saturated results in Australian Dockrillia breeding.

Seedlings should show a strong terete habit and may lean towards deeper colouring, though variation across the batch is to be expected. The flower spikes are cascading. Also listed as Dockrillia by Australian growers.

Growing conditions

• Climate: cool to intermediate. Cool nights are needed.
• Temperature: 5°C to 26°C.
• Light: bright filtered light.
• Humidity: 60% or higher.
• Culture: best grown mounted or in a basket with good airflow and a dry winter rest.

What you'll receive

Established seedlings in 66mm pots, grown in the Dandenong Ranges. They are not yet at flowering size and have not flowered. Individual results will vary. That is the nature of a seedling cross and part of what makes it worthwhile.
