Dendrobium striolatum (Syn. Dockrillia striolata) 'Tassie east coast' is a division of a Tasmanian east coast form of this species, commonly known as the Streaked Rock Orchid. D. striolatum is a lithophytic Australian native — in habitat it grows directly on granite boulders and cliff faces along the exposed coastal ranges of eastern Tasmania and parts of the New South Wales and Victorian coast. The Tasmanian east coast form is a geographically distinct provenance, collected and maintained in cultivation for its hardy constitution and authentic regional origin.
What to expect
- Flowering: Late winter to spring (September–November). Flowers carried on short spikes near the foliage.
- Flowers: Cream to pale yellow with distinctive reddish-brown streaking across the sepals and petals. Small but characterful, with a mild fragrance. Typical of the species.
- Plant: Mini-miniature lithophyte with pendulous, wiry, terete leaves forming a dense mat or cascading growth. Slow to establish but long-lived once settled.
Growing notes
- Temperature: Cool to cold-growing. Tolerates a wide temperature range and can handle near-freezing conditions when kept dry. Best grown outdoors in a sheltered but exposed position in southern Australia.
- Light: High light. In habitat grows in full exposure on rock faces. Under glass or shadecloth, provide as much light as possible without burning.
- Water: Water freely in summer; reduce significantly in winter. Allow the mount or medium to dry between waterings, especially in cooler months. Tolerates drought better than most orchids.
- Mounting: Best grown mounted on hardwood or cork bark to replicate its natural lithophytic habit. If potted, use a very coarse, fast-draining mix. Avoid repotting unnecessarily — prefers to be left undisturbed.
- Feeding: Light feeding with a dilute balanced fertiliser during the summer growing season. Cease in autumn and winter.
