Dracula inaequalis

Botanical Profile

  • Origin: Native to the wonderfully cool and misty cloud forests of Colombia and Ecuador, typically found at elevations between 1400–2000 metres (approx. 4,500–6,500 feet).
  • Leaves: This is a charmingly compact species. Like other Draculas, it possesses thin leaves that grow in tufts from a short rhizome.
  • Flowers: Produces exquisite, single, triangular-shaped flowers, predominantly white with intricate pink markings that fancifully resemble a monkey's face. The blooms measure approximately 3.8 cm (1.5 inches) wide and 5 cm (2 inches) tall, featuring the characteristic long sepal tails of the genus. It typically flowers during the summer and autumn months.
  • Growth Habit: A delightful epiphyte, growing naturally upon trees. It forms neat tufts and likely shares the pendulous flower habit common to many Draculas.

Care Notes

  • Light: Prefers a shady spot with low to medium indirect light. It absolutely must be protected from direct sunlight.
  • Water: Requires consistently moist conditions – the growing medium should never be allowed to dry out completely. Water thoroughly when the surface feels just slightly damp. Purity is key; use rainwater, distilled, or reverse osmosis water to avoid mineral buildup.
  • Humidity: Exceptionally high humidity (ideally 70-85% or higher) is essential for success. This must be combined with good air circulation to prevent fungal problems.
  • Temperature: A cool to intermediate grower, thriving in conditions mimicking its high-altitude home. Aim for daytime temperatures generally below 21-27°C (70-80°F), with cooler nights dropping towards 10-15°C (50-60°F).
  • Fertiliser: Feed very lightly. A balanced orchid fertiliser, diluted to quarter strength, applied perhaps every few weeks to once a month during growth, is sufficient. Flush the medium with pure water regularly.
  • Repotting: Annual repotting is recommended using a fresh, moisture-retentive but well-aerated mix. Mesh pots or hanging baskets work beautifully, promoting air circulation and accommodating any descending flower spikes.

Extra Notes

  • Growth Rate & Difficulty: This species presents a considerable challenge, mainly due to its stringent requirements for cool temperatures, constant high humidity, and pure water. It is definitely not recommended for beginners. (Specific growth rate not found, but often slow).
  • Unique Characteristics: The species name 'inaequalis' refers to its unequal sepals. Like its relatives, it employs mimicry, likely resembling fungi to attract pollinating flies.
  • Cautions: Highly sensitive to drying out, poor water quality (high TDS), low humidity, and excessive heat. Finding this species can be difficult as Draculas are often rare and sourced from specialist nurseries. As always, keep ornamental plants away from pets.
