Dracula Phantom
Botanical Profile
- Origin (Parentage): This atmospheric hybrid, *Dracula* Phantom, was registered in 1997. It's a primary hybrid, being a direct cross between two impressive species: *Dracula vampira* and *Dracula tubeana*.
- Leaves: Features the characteristic thin, pleated leaves typical of the genus, growing in verdant clumps from a compact rhizome. Like all Draculas, it lacks pseudobulbs, relying on its roots and leaves for moisture retention.
- Flowers: Produces spectacular flowers showcasing the unique *Dracula* form with fused sepals and dramatic, long tails. Given its parentage (*D. vampira* is famously dark, *D. tubeana* is large), expect impressive, possibly large and darkly coloured blooms, potentially with contrasting features. Flowers typically appear sequentially on the spike.
- Growth Habit: A stunning epiphyte, growing naturally on trees in cloud forests. It forms clumps (caespitose growth), and flower spikes often emerge horizontally or hang downwards, making basket culture ideal.
Care Notes
- Light: Thrives in low light or deep shade (around 600-1500 foot-candles). Must be protected from direct sunlight.
- Water: Requires consistently high moisture levels – the potting medium should remain damp at all times but not waterlogged. Frequent watering, potentially daily depending on conditions, is necessary. Use pure water (rainwater, distilled, RO) to avoid mineral buildup.
- Humidity: Extremely high humidity is non-negotiable, ideally 80-90% or higher. Superb air circulation is vital to prevent issues associated with such high humidity levels.
- Temperature: A cool to intermediate grower, reflecting its parentage from higher altitudes. Aim for nighttime temperatures between 10-15°C (50-60°F) and daytime temperatures ideally below 24°C (75°F). A distinct temperature drop at night is crucial.
- Fertiliser: Feed extremely lightly and infrequently with a highly diluted (e.g., quarter-strength or 100ppm N) balanced orchid fertiliser only during active growth periods. Flush regularly with pure water.
- Repotting: Benefits from annual or biennial repotting in a fresh, moisture-retentive yet very airy medium (like high-quality sphagnum moss or a fine bark mix). Mesh pots or baskets are strongly recommended for optimal root health and to accommodate pendulous flower spikes.
Extra Notes
- Growth Rate & Difficulty: Cultivating *Dracula* Phantom is a demanding task, requiring dedicated effort to maintain its specific cool, humid, and moist environment. It is best suited for experienced growers.
- * **Unique Characteristics:** Blends the traits of the famously dark *D. vampira* with the large-flowered *D. tubeana*, promising a truly dramatic floral display. * **Cautions:** Highly sensitive to poor water quality, low humidity, and heat stress. The *Dracula* genus is generally considered non-toxic to pets.
