Dracuvallia Mem. Susan Montez 'Sundowner' is a selected clone of this warm-growing intergeneric hybrid between Dracula and Masdevallia. With its pendant warm-orange flowers and expressive face-like centre, it sits beautifully between the two parent genera in character — more dramatic than a typical Masdevallia, but more approachable than a full Dracula. 'Sundowner' has been selected for its rich warm colouring and strong flower presentation. This is a division of that selected clone.
If you've been curious about the Dracula alliance but aren't ready to commit to the more demanding species, this is an excellent place to start.
What to expect
- Flowering: Single flowers produced on pendant spikes that emerge from the base of the plant. Warm orange with a distinctive face-like centre — the Dracula influence is clearly visible.
- Plant: Compact growth habit, manageable size. Generally considered more forgiving than pure Dracula species.
Growing notes
- Potting — important: Flower spikes emerge from the base and hang downward. Must be grown in a basket, net pot, or open-sided container so spikes can emerge and hang freely. A closed pot will prevent flowering.
- Temperature: Cool to intermediate. Avoid sustained heat.
- Light: Filtered shade. More shade in summer, brighter in winter.
- Water: Keep evenly moist. High humidity essential — do not allow to dry out.
- Humidity & air: Very high humidity with constant gentle air movement. Rainwater or RO water preferred.
