Masdevallia Abbey Sarah 'Amber Blaze' (Falcata 'Gleam of Fire' × Antizana 'Dragon's Lair')

Masd. Abbey Sarah is a registered grex (RHS, 12 Oct 2007, originated by C. Halls) that combines two established Masdevallia hybrids: the seed parent Masd. Falcata (Masd. coccinea × Masd. veitchiana) and the pollen parent Masd. Antizana (a registered grex involving Masd. yungasensis subsp. calocodon). This plant is the clone 'Amber Blaze', from the cross of Falcata 'Gleam of Fire' × Antizana 'Dragon's Lair'. It has golden-yellow to orange kite flowers with red-orange striping.

About this plant

• Flowers: Classic triangular kite form with three converging tails: a long dorsal tail standing straight above the flower, and two shorter lower tails. The ground colour is golden-yellow to orange, overlaid with pronounced red-orange striping and veining radiating from the centre. A deep red-maroon column is visible at the throat. One flower per stem.

Growing conditions

• Temperature: Cool-growing, 3°C to 18°C, in keeping with the high-altitude Andean origins of both parent lines. It needs cool nights and is not suited to warm climates.
• Light: Bright filtered light, with no direct midday sun.
• Water: Keep evenly moist at all times. It has no pseudobulbs, so do not allow it to dry out.
• Humidity and air: 60% or higher, with constant gentle air movement. Rainwater or RO water is preferred.
