Masdevallia Angel Frost 'Winter Coat'

Masdevallia Angel Frost 'Winter Coat' is a selected clone of the Angel Frost grex (M. veitchiana × M. strobelii), registered by J & L. Orchids in 1982. M. veitchiana contributes the broad, open sepal form and the characteristic velvety texture of the flower surface; M. strobelii brings compact habit and the dense freckling that defines the grex. 'Winter Coat' was selected for the density and evenness of that magenta freckling across the full face of the flower, heavier than most plants in this cross. This is a division of that selected clone.

What to expect

• Flowering: Single flowers on upright spikes, held above the foliage. Can flower more than once a year under good conditions.
• Flowers: Deep golden-orange ground colour, densely and evenly freckled with magenta-pink across the full face of all three sepals. Freckling heaviest toward the column, fading to lighter spots near the sepal tips. Tails orange-yellow, upright. The velvety surface texture is pronounced — visible even in photographs. Richer spotting than most orange hybrids in the genus.
• Plant: Compact miniature habit, reflecting the strobelii parentage. Vigorous grower that divides well over time.

Growing notes

• Temperature: Cool to intermediate. Both parents originate from high-altitude Andean cloud forests. Avoid sustained warmth.
• Light: Bright filtered shade. No direct midday sun.
• Water: Keep evenly moist at all times. No pseudobulbs means no water reserves — do not allow to dry out.
• Humidity & air: High humidity with constant gentle air movement. Rainwater or RO water preferred.
