Masdevallia angulata 'Pebble Beach' is a selected clone of this cool-growing species from the cloud forests of Nariño, Colombia and north-western Ecuador, where it grows as a terrestrial or lithophyte on steep embankments at 600–2,600 m. M. angulata is one of the more freely flowering species in the genus — a mature plant will carry multiple spikes simultaneously, each held well below the foliage. 'Pebble Beach' was selected for the density and saturation of its spotting: a deep magenta ground with concentrated purple-maroon spotting that gives the flower a rich, almost lacquered appearance. This is a division of that selected clone.

What to expect

  • Flowering: Fall through late winter. Slender, descending single-flowered spikes emerge from the base of the plant and are held well below the foliage. A well-established plant will carry several spikes simultaneously. Basket culture is required — see Growing notes.
  • Flowers: Deep magenta to burgundy-maroon ground, heavily overlaid with dense purple-maroon spotting. Dorsal sepal broad and triangular with a short upward-pointing tail; lateral sepals large and spreading with yellow-green tails. Fleshy and long-lasting. At approximately 5 cm across, the flower is large relative to the plant size.
  • Plant: Miniature, clump-forming. Stout, erect foliage with a purplish cast to the ramicauls. Vigorous when conditions suit — cool nights, consistent moisture, and basket culture reward with multiple spike flushes per season.

Growing notes

  • Potting — important: Flower spikes emerge from the base and hang downward. Must be grown in a basket, net pot, or open-sided container so spikes can emerge and hang freely. A closed pot will prevent flowering.
  • Temperature: Cool to intermediate. M. angulata originates from cloud forest in Colombia and Ecuador at 600–2,600 m. Avoid sustained warmth.
  • Light: Bright filtered shade. No direct midday sun.
  • Water: Keep evenly moist at all times. No pseudobulbs means no water reserves — do not allow to dry out.
  • Humidity & air: High humidity with constant gentle air movement. Rainwater or RO water preferred.
