Masdevallia Bill Bergstrom 'Gold Dust'

Masdevallia Bill Bergstrom 'Gold Dust' is a selected clone of the Bill Bergstrom grex (M. Copper Angel × M. decumana), originated by Peninsula and registered by G. Staal in 1995. Copper Angel brings the warm orange ground colour and broad sepal form; M. decumana contributes the elongated tails and the fine, dense freckling that covers the full sepal surface. 'Gold Dust' was selected for the contrast between its golden-yellow ground and the intense red-orange spotting — the freckling reads almost luminous against the lighter base. This is a division of that selected clone.

What to expect

• Flowering: Single flowers on upright spikes. The long, upswept upper tail is a defining feature of this grex and particularly pronounced on this clone.
• Flowers: Golden-orange ground colour, densely freckled with red-orange across all three sepals. The upper sepal deepens to rich red toward the column and carries a long, slender dark maroon tail. Lateral sepals are broader with shorter downward-sweeping dark tails. More angular and elongated in character than the rounder veitchiana-type hybrids.
• Plant: Compact habit. Well-suited to shadehouse or climate-controlled growing.

Growing notes

• Temperature: Cool to intermediate. M. decumana originates from cloud-forest habitats in Peru. Avoid sustained warmth.
• Light: Bright filtered shade. No direct midday sun.
• Water: Keep evenly moist at all times. No pseudobulbs means no water reserves — do not allow to dry out.
• Humidity & air: High humidity with constant gentle air movement. Rainwater or RO water preferred.
