Masdevallia caloptera (species)

Masdevallia caloptera is a mini-miniature species from the cloud forests of Colombia, Ecuador and Peru, growing as an epiphyte at elevations of 1,800–2,600 metres. First described by Reichenbach in 1874.

What to expect

• Flowering: Blooms in winter, with an erect inflorescence carrying two to nine small flowers held well above the leaves.
• Flowers: Small (around 2cm), typical of the species' compact, delicate presentation.
• Plant: Compact, mini-miniature Masdevallia growth habit — slender ramicauls with a single apical leaf.

Growing notes

• Temperature: Cool to cold — runs colder than most Masdevallia in cultivation. Avoid sustained heat.
• Light: Partial shade to bright filtered light. No direct midday sun.
• Water: Keep evenly moist at all times. No pseudobulbs means no water reserves — do not allow to dry out.
• Humidity & air: High humidity with constant gentle air movement. Rainwater or RO water preferred.
