Masdevallia caloptera (species)

Masdevallia caloptera is a mini-miniature species from the cloud forests of Colombia, Ecuador and Peru, growing as an epiphyte at elevations of 1,800–2,600 metres. First described by Reichenbach in 1874.

About this plant

• Flowering: Blooms in winter, with an erect inflorescence carrying two to nine small flowers held well above the leaves.
• Flowers: Small, around 2 cm, in keeping with the species' compact, delicate presentation.
• Plant: Compact, mini-miniature Masdevallia growth habit, with slender ramicauls each carrying a single apical leaf.

Growing conditions

• Temperature: Cool to cold (2°C – 20°C). It runs colder than most Masdevallia in cultivation, needs cool nights and is not suited to warm climates. Avoid sustained heat.
• Light: Partial shade to bright filtered light. No direct midday sun.
• Water: Keep evenly moist at all times. With no pseudobulbs there are no water reserves, so do not allow it to dry out.
• Humidity & air: Humidity of 60% or higher, with constant gentle air movement. Rainwater or RO water preferred.
