Masdevallia coccinea is one of the most celebrated species in the genus — a high-altitude Colombian cloud forest plant renowned for its large, bold flowers carried on tall spikes well clear of the foliage. The alba form, producing pure white flowers in place of the typical magenta or red, is genuinely rare in cultivation. 'White Squall' was raised from seed using two named alba clones as parents: coccinea alba 'Snowbird' and alba 'Bianca'. It was selected as the standout plant from that cross for its flower size, form, and purity of colour. This is a division of that selected clone.

What to expect

  • Flowering: Single flowers on tall erect spikes held well above the foliage. A well-grown specimen will carry multiple spikes simultaneously. Flowers spring through autumn.
  • Flowers: Large, broad, pure white lateral sepals with subtle veining and cream-yellow tails. Excellent flower size, form, and clarity of colour.
  • Plant: Medium-sized Masdevallia, larger and more robust than many in the genus. A strong grower when kept cool and moist.

Growing notes

  • Temperature: Cool to cold. M. coccinea originates from Colombian Andean cloud forests at 2,500–3,500 m. Avoid sustained warmth.
  • Light: Bright filtered shade. No direct midday sun.
  • Water: Keep evenly moist at all times. No pseudobulbs means no water reserves — do not allow to dry out.
  • Humidity & air: High humidity with constant gentle air movement. Rainwater or RO water preferred.
