Masdevallia coccinea f. harryana ‘Colombian Queen’

Masdevallia coccinea f. harryana is one of the most celebrated forms of this Colombian cloud forest species. The typical M. coccinea spans a wide colour range, from white through yellow, pink and magenta. The harryana form, selected and distributed in cultivation for over a century, is defined by its deep, saturated purple-violet pigmentation: broad rounded lateral sepals in rich blue-violet with a darker centre, and long slender tails. 'Colombian Queen' is a selected clone retained for its exceptional colour depth and clean, well-rounded form.

• Flowering: Single flowers on tall erect spikes held well above the foliage. A well-grown specimen will carry multiple spikes at once. Flowers spring through autumn in Australian conditions.
• Flowers: Deep purple-violet, with broad rounded lateral sepals and long slender tails. Among the most intensely coloured clones of coccinea in the collection.
• Plant: A medium-sized Masdevallia, larger and more robust than many in the genus. A strong grower when kept cool and consistently moist.

Growing conditions

• Temperature: Cool to cold, 5°C – 18°C. M. coccinea originates from Colombian Andean cloud forests at 2,500–3,500 m. It needs cool nights and is not suited to warm climates. Avoid sustained warmth above 22°C.
• Light: Bright filtered light. No direct midday sun.
• Water: Keep evenly moist at all times. With no pseudobulbs there are no water reserves, so do not allow it to dry out.
• Humidity & air: Humidity of 60% or higher, with constant gentle air movement. Rainwater or RO water preferred.
