Masdevallia coccinea 'Petite Rose'

Masdevallia coccinea 'Petite Rose' is a compact colour form of this iconic Colombian cloud forest species. M. coccinea is one of the great Masdevallia species, native to the Eastern Cordillera at 2,440–3,600 m, and the foundation parent behind much of the cool-growing hybrid work of the past century. 'Petite Rose' is a compact, rose-pink selection valued for its clear, saturated colour and the floriferous habit typical of well-established coccinea clones.

About this plant

• Flowering: Single flowers on tall erect spikes held well clear of the foliage. Well-established plants can carry multiple spikes at once. Flowers in spring through autumn.
• Flowers: Clear, saturated rose-pink, with rounded overlapping lateral sepals and a slender upswept dorsal tail. The colour is even across the full sepal face. Compact in scale relative to typical coccinea forms.
• Plant: Compact, upright growth. A vigorous grower when kept cool and moist.

Growing conditions

• Temperature: Cool to cold, 5°C–18°C. This is a high-altitude Colombian species that needs cool nights. Avoid sustained warmth, particularly through summer. It is not suited to warm climates.
• Light: Bright filtered light. No direct midday sun.
• Water: Keep evenly moist at all times. It has no pseudobulbs, so do not allow it to dry out.
• Humidity & air: Humidity of 60% or higher, with constant gentle air movement. Rainwater or RO water is preferred.
