Masdevallia coccinea 'Petite Rose'

Masdevallia coccinea 'Petite Rose' is a compact colour form of this iconic Colombian cloud forest species. M. coccinea is one of the great Masdevallia species — native to the Eastern Cordillera at 2,440–3,600 m, and the foundation parent behind much of the cool-growing hybrid work of the past century. 'Petite Rose' is a compact, rose-pink selection valued for its clear, saturated colour and the floriferous habit typical of well-established coccinea clones.

What to expect

• Flowering: Single flowers on tall erect spikes held well clear of the foliage. Can carry multiple spikes simultaneously on well-established plants. Flowers in spring through autumn.
• Flowers: Clear, saturated rose-pink with rounded overlapping lateral sepals and a slender upswept dorsal tail. Even colour saturation across the full sepal face. Compact in scale relative to the typical coccinea forms.
• Plant: Compact upright growth. A vigorous grower when kept cool and moist.

Growing notes

• Temperature: Cool to cold. A high-altitude Colombian species — avoid sustained warmth, particularly through summer.
• Light: Bright filtered shade. No direct midday sun.
• Water: Keep evenly moist at all times. No pseudobulbs — do not allow to dry out.
• Humidity & air: High humidity with constant gentle air movement. Rainwater or RO water preferred.
