Masdevallia coccinea 'The Queen'

Masdevallia coccinea 'The Queen' is a selected clone of Masdevallia coccinea, one of the most widely grown and long-established species in the genus. Native to the high-altitude cloud forests of Colombia, M. coccinea is known for its large, single flowers on upright spikes and its exceptional colour range across cultivars. 'The Queen' is a richly coloured purple form, selected for the depth and evenness of its colour across the full face of the flower.

About this plant

• Flowering: Single flowers on upright spikes. Can flower more than once a year under stable conditions.
• Flowers: Rich purple with even colour across broad, overlapping sepals. The characteristic coccinea flower form (large, rounded and bold) is well expressed in this clone.
• Plant: Compact, clumping habit with upright, leathery foliage. A vigorous grower under suitable cool conditions.

Growing conditions

• Temperature: Cool-growing, from high-altitude Colombian cloud forest. Suited to 5°C – 18°C and needs cool nights. Not suitable for warm climates: avoid sustained warmth, and grow it only if you can keep conditions cool through summer.
• Light: Bright filtered light. No direct midday sun.
• Water: Keep evenly moist at all times. With no pseudobulbs there are no water reserves, so do not allow it to dry out.
• Humidity & air: Humidity of 60% or higher, with constant gentle air movement. Rainwater or RO water preferred.
