Masdevallia coccinea var. xanthina is the yellow colour form of this iconic Colombian species — one of the rarest and most sought-after variants in the genus. Where the typical coccinea produces flowers in reds, pinks, and cerise, the xanthina form is pure golden-yellow throughout, including the tails. 'Golden Moon' is a selected clone of this variety, chosen for its rich, even colour, large broad laterals, and strong multi-spike performance. This is a division of that selected plant.
What to expect
- Flowering: Single flowers on tall erect spikes held well above the foliage. A well-grown plant will carry multiple spikes simultaneously. In Australia, expect flowers October through December.
- Flowers: Large, broad, rich golden-yellow lateral sepals with matching yellow tails. Clean, even colour throughout — no red or pink tones.
- Plant: Medium-sized Masdevallia, robust and free-flowering when conditions suit. A strong grower when kept cool and moist.
Growing notes
- Temperature: Cool to cold. M. coccinea originates from the Eastern Cordillera of Colombia at 2,440–3,600 m. Avoid sustained warmth.
- Light: Bright filtered shade. No direct midday sun.
- Water: Keep evenly moist at all times. No pseudobulbs means no water reserves — do not allow to dry out.
- Humidity & air: High humidity with constant gentle air movement. Rainwater or RO water preferred.
