Masdevallia (coccinea × amabilis) 'Twilight'

Masdevallia (coccinea × amabilis) 'Twilight' is a cross between two closely related Andean species from the Coccineae subsection. Masd. coccinea, "the little flag," is native to Colombia's Eastern Cordillera (2,440–3,600 m). Masd. amabilis, "the lovely masdevallia," is native to northern and central Peru (2,000–5,300 m) and is naturally variable in colour. It is an unregistered cross, not a named grex.

About this plant

• Flowers: An unusual, two-lobed form typical of coccinea-type dorsal reduction. The dorsal sepal is drawn into a single long, fine tail rising straight above the flower, while the two lateral sepals fuse into broad, wing-like lobes. Colour is a rich magenta-purple with darker veining, softening to a pale lilac-white centre, with a small maroon column visible at the throat.
• Habit: One flower per stem.

Growing conditions

• Temperature: Cool to cold growing, 3°C – 18°C. Both parents come from high-altitude Andean cloud forest (2,000 m+). It needs cool nights and is not suited to warm climates.
• Light: Bright filtered light, no direct midday sun.
• Water: Keep evenly moist at all times. It has no pseudobulbs, so do not allow it to dry out.
• Humidity & air: Humidity of 60% or higher, with constant gentle air movement. Rainwater or RO water is preferred.
