Masdevallia coccinea xanthina 'Seattle Gold' is a selected clone of the rare yellow colour form of M. coccinea. The xanthina form — producing clear yellow to gold flowers rather than the typical red or pink — is among the most sought-after and scarce colour variants in the entire genus. M. coccinea is native to the Eastern Cordillera of Colombia at 2,440–3,600 m; the xanthina form occurs naturally but is far less common than the red forms in both the wild and cultivation. 'Seattle Gold' is selected for the purity and brightness of its yellow colouration.

What to expect

  • Flowering: Single flowers on tall erect spikes held clearly above the foliage. Can carry multiple spikes simultaneously on well-established plants.
  • Flowers: Clear, bright golden-yellow throughout — the classic coccinea broad lateral sepal form in a colour that is genuinely rare. The yellow may vary slightly in depth with growing conditions.
  • Plant: Compact, upright growth typical of M. coccinea. Vigorous when kept cool and moist.

Growing notes

  • Temperature: Cool to cold. A high-altitude Colombian species — avoid sustained warmth, particularly through summer.
  • Light: Bright filtered shade. No direct midday sun.
  • Water: Keep evenly moist at all times. No pseudobulbs — do not allow to dry out.
  • Humidity & air: High humidity with constant gentle air movement. Rainwater or RO water preferred.
