Masdevallia colossus is a large-growing species from the cloud forests of southeastern Ecuador and northern Peru, first collected near Molinopampa, Peru in 1977 and formally described by Carlyle Luer in 1978. As the name suggests, colossus is one of the biggest species in the genus by both plant and flower size — a genuine standout among cool-growing Masdevallia.
What to expect
- Flowering: A single flower carried on a slender, suberect spike arising low on the ramicaul, typically through the cooler months.
- Flowers: Large for the genus, with bold, substantial form. In the wild the species is pollinated by carrion flies, so flowers can carry a faint musty scent rather than a sweet one — worth knowing before you bring one indoors to admire.
- Plant: Stout, erect growths carrying a single broad, leathery leaf. A genuinely large-growing Masdevallia — give it room.
Growing notes
- Temperature: Cool to cold. A high-altitude Ecuadorian/Peruvian cloud forest species found at 2,000–2,500 m — avoid sustained warmth.
- Light: Bright filtered shade. No direct midday sun.
- Water: Keep evenly moist at all times. No pseudobulbs — do not allow to dry out.
- Humidity & air: High humidity with constant gentle air movement. Rainwater or RO water preferred.
