Masdevallia Copper Angel 'Golden Gate'

Masdevallia Copper Angel 'Golden Gate' is a clone of one of the most celebrated primary hybrids in the genus — Masd. triangularis × Masd. veitchiana, registered by J&L Orchids in 1982. The 'Golden Gate' clone was selected by Golden Gate Orchids, the legendary San Francisco nursery founded by Tom Perlite in 1981 and long regarded as one of the world's finest Masdevallia collections. Plants from this nursery were consistently selected for flower quality, vigour, and performance — and this clone reflects that standard. This is a division of the original Golden Gate selection, believed to have been imported into Australia from the US.

What to expect

• Flowering: Single flowers on erect spikes, freely produced. A well-grown specimen carries multiple spikes simultaneously as shown. Can rebloom multiple times a year.
• Flowers: Rich copper-orange with darker orange-red veining throughout and long crimson tails. Vivid, warm-toned, and distinctive — a step above the typical Copper Angel in colour depth and form.
• Plant: Compact and vigorous. Notably more heat tolerant than most Masdevallia — one of the better choices for growers in warmer climates or without dedicated cool growing conditions.

Growing notes

• Temperature: Cool to intermediate. More tolerant of warmth than most Masdevallia due to its triangularis background — a genuine advantage for Australian conditions.
• Light: Bright filtered shade. No direct midday sun.
• Water: Keep evenly moist at all times. No pseudobulbs means no water reserves — do not allow to dry out.
• Humidity & air: High humidity with constant gentle air movement. Rainwater or RO water preferred.
