Masdevallia coriacea ‘Red Baron’

Masdevallia coriacea 'Red Baron' is a selected clonal form of Masdevallia coriacea, a distinctive species from the humid cloud forests of Colombia and Ecuador valued for its unusual olive-bronze flowers with strong maroon to deep red striping. Unlike many Masdevallia, coriacea produces flowers very close to the foliage on short, suberect spikes — the flowers nest within the plant rather than rising above it, giving a different visual character to the typical upright-spiked species. 'Red Baron' is a clone selected for the intensity and definition of its dark red striping.

What to expect

• Flowering: Flowers carried close to the foliage on short suberect spikes. A different presentation from most Masdevallia — the flowers sit within and among the leaves.
• Flowers: Olive-green to bronze ground with strong maroon to deep red striping and shading. Elongated sepals curve outward giving a sculptural, angular appearance. The 'Red Baron' clone is selected for the depth and definition of its red markings.
• Plant: Compact, upright growth. A species with a slightly different character to the typical Masdevallia in both flower presentation and overall habit.
