Masdevallia Falcata 'Inferno' is a selected clone of one of the oldest and most celebrated Masdevallia hybrids in cultivation — M. coccinea × M. veitchiana, registered by Lawrence in 1899. Over 125 years later it remains a benchmark cross, combining the bold flower size and large broad laterals of veitchiana with the rich colour and strong spike habit of coccinea. 'Inferno' has been selected for its exceptional flower size and intensity of colour — the name says it all. This is a division of that selected clone.
What to expect
- Flowering: Single flowers on tall erect spikes held well clear of the foliage. A well-grown plant carries multiple spikes simultaneously. Flowers spring through summer.
- Flowers: Massive. Vivid fiery orange-red with a glowing yellow-orange interior and strong veining throughout. Among the largest flowers in the cool-growing Masdevallia world.
- Plant: Vigorous and robust for the genus — the veitchiana background gives this hybrid real presence as a specimen plant.
Growing notes
- Temperature: Cool to cold. Both parents are high-altitude Andean species. Avoid sustained warmth.
- Light: Bright filtered shade. No direct midday sun.
- Water: Keep evenly moist at all times. No pseudobulbs means no water reserves — do not allow to dry out.
- Humidity & air: High humidity with constant gentle air movement. Rainwater or RO water preferred.
