Masdevallia Funky 'Hunky'

Masdevallia Funky 'Hunky' is a selected clone of the Funky grex (M. Tuakau Candy × M. Kara's Delight), registered by C. Halls in 2007. Both parents sit in the striped orange-yellow end of the Masdevallia colour range, and the cross delivers on that: clean, bold magenta stripes over a golden-orange ground, carried on a plant that produces flowers in numbers that are unusual for the genus. 'Hunky' was selected for its vigour and floriferousness — it routinely carries ten or more open flowers simultaneously from a pot that fits in the palm of your hand. This is a division of that selected clone.

What to expect

• Flowering: Single flowers on upright spikes, produced in exceptional quantity — this clone regularly carries ten or more flowers open at once. Free-flowering across multiple flushes throughout the year.
• Flowers: Golden-orange to amber ground colour with bold, clean magenta-red stripes running the full length of all three sepals — three to four stripes per sepal, well-defined and consistent. Tails slender, orange-yellow. The striped pattern is among the cleanest in this colour range.
• Plant: Compact miniature habit, vigorous and clump-forming. Exceptional flower-to-plant-size ratio — one of the more free-flowering Masdevallia hybrids available.

Growing notes

• Temperature: Cool to intermediate. Avoid sustained warmth.
• Light: Bright filtered shade. No direct midday sun.
• Water: Keep evenly moist at all times. No pseudobulbs means no water reserves — do not allow to dry out.
• Humidity & air: High humidity with constant gentle air movement. Rainwater or RO water preferred.
