About this plant

Masdevallia Heathii (M. ignea × M. veitchiana) is a historic 1899 primary hybrid, known for its large inflated flowers and vigorous habit. Masdevallia Rein Staal is an Australian-bred hybrid from the C.Halls stable, widely used in breeding for its colour and vigour. 'Tequila Sunrise' was selected from this cross as the standout plant for its golden-orange flowers with a magenta-pink flash through the centre.

Both parents are robust, free-flowering hybrids, and this cross inherits that vigour.

• Flowering: Single flowers on erect spikes held clear of the foliage. It can carry multiple spikes at once. Flowers spring through summer.
• Flowers: Large, inflated golden-orange lateral sepals with a magenta-pink flash through the centre and a long orange dorsal tail.
• Plant: Vigorous and robust.

Growing conditions

• Temperature: Cool to intermediate, 5°C – 22°C. It needs cool nights and is not suited to warm climates.
• Light: Bright filtered light. No direct midday sun.
• Water: Keep evenly moist at all times. With no pseudobulbs there are no water reserves, so do not allow it to dry out. Rainwater or RO water is preferred.
• Humidity and air: Humidity of 60% or higher, with constant gentle air movement.
