Masdevallia huebschiana is a small, cold-growing species native to the western Andean slopes of Ecuador and adjacent northern Peru, found at elevations of 1,600–3,000 m. It is now most often catalogued under its currently accepted name, Masdevallia polysticta — "the many-spotted masdevallia," from the Greek poly (many) and stictus (spotted), describing its densely spotted flowers. This is a distinct clone from the other polysticta selections in our catalogue ('John', 'CA') — each is its own individual plant.
What to expect
- Flowers: Small, white to cream flowers densely covered in dark maroon-purple spotting across all segments. Sepal margins are finely fringed with short white hairs. The lip and column are yellow-orange. Three slender, curving yellow tails extend well beyond the sepals.
- Habit: Multiple flowers are held simultaneously along a slender raceme arising from among the foliage, rather than one flower per stem.
Growing notes
- Temperature: Cool to cold growing, high-altitude Andean cloud forest origin.
- Light: Bright filtered shade, no direct midday sun.
- Water: Keep evenly moist at all times — no pseudobulbs, do not allow to dry out.
- Humidity & air: High humidity with constant gentle air movement. Rainwater or RO water preferred.
