Masdevallia ignea 'Owen' is a selected clone of this iconic cold-growing species from the Eastern Cordillera of Colombia, where it grows at 2,600–3,800 m. M. ignea — the name means "fiery" — is one of the most visually commanding species in the genus, producing large, open, orange-scarlet flowers on tall spikes held well above the foliage. 'Owen' was selected for the clarity and intensity of its orange-coral colouration and the bold, open form of the flower. This is a division of that selected clone.
What to expect
- Flowering: Late spring and summer. Single flowers on slender spikes that rise 30–37 cm above the foliage, presenting the flower prominently and face-forward. Freely flowering when cold-growing conditions are met.
- Flowers: Vivid orange-scarlet to coral-red, with a glossy, waxy surface and good substance. Lateral sepals fused into two broad, rounded lobes; dorsal sepal forming a narrower upper arch. Tails short and reduced compared to most Masdevallia — the result is a broad, open face that presents the full colour without distraction. Approximately 8 cm across. As species orchids go, this is a large, bold flower.
- Plant: Small, upright growth with dark green lance-shaped leaves. Vigorous when cold conditions are met — the tall spikes make this a striking specimen when in flower.
Growing notes
- Temperature: Cool to cold. M. ignea originates from the Eastern Cordillera of Colombia at 2,600–3,800 m. Avoid sustained warmth.
- Light: Bright filtered shade. No direct midday sun.
- Water: Keep evenly moist at all times. No pseudobulbs means no water reserves — do not allow to dry out.
- Humidity & air: High humidity with constant gentle air movement. Rainwater or RO water preferred.
