Masdevallia ignea 'Volcanic Flash'

Masdevallia ignea 'Volcanic Flash' is a selected clone of the fire-red Masdevallia species native to the Eastern Cordillera of Colombia, found at elevations of 2,600 to 3,800 metres. M. ignea is one of the great Masdevallia species. It has been used as a parent in an enormous proportion of the cool-growing hybrid work done over the past century. 'Volcanic Flash' has been selected for its vivid, saturated colouring, true to the species' fiery reputation.

About this plant

• Flowering: Single flowers on tall erect spikes held well clear of the foliage. Flowers in spring to summer in Australian conditions.
• Flowers: Large and unspotted, with broad rounded lateral sepals and a single tail. Pure saturated colour with no spotting or striping.
• Plant: Compact, with dark green foliage. A vigorous, well-established species.

Growing conditions

• Temperature: 2°C to 18°C. A high-altitude Colombian species that needs cool nights. Avoid sustained warmth and protect it from summer heat. It is not suited to warm climates.
• Light: Bright filtered light. Good light levels are important for flowering.
• Water: Keep evenly moist at all times. With no pseudobulbs there are no water reserves, so do not allow it to dry out.
• Humidity and air: Humidity of 60% or higher, with constant gentle air movement. Rainwater or RO water is preferred.
