Masdevallia John Leathers #55 × triangularis 'Hawk Hill' is an unregistered primary cross between a selected clone of Masdevallia John Leathers (M. chaparensis × M. calocodon, B. Cobbledick 1992) and Masdevallia triangularis 'Hawk Hill'. M. triangularis is a Venezuelan species known for its wide, open, triangular flowers and amber-yellow colouring; crossed with John Leathers it produces something with outstanding floriferousness — multiple spikes all around the plant simultaneously, each carrying warm amber-peach flowers with bold magenta-red stripes and dark crimson tails. On a well-grown specimen, the effect is spectacular.

What to expect

  • Flowering: Highly floriferous — multiple spikes produced simultaneously from all around the plant. Can be grown as an impressive specimen mounted or in a basket.
  • Flowers: Warm amber-peach with bold magenta-red radiating stripes, yellow centre, and long dark crimson tails. Open, triangular form inherited from the triangularis parent. Distinctive and eye-catching.
  • Plant: Compact and vigorous with broad paddle-shaped leaves. Builds quickly into an impressive clump.

Growing notes

  • Temperature: Cool to intermediate. Both parents are cool-growing; triangularis is slightly more forgiving than many Masdevallia species.
  • Light: Bright filtered shade. Good light levels are important for triggering flowering.
  • Water: Keep evenly moist at all times. Do not allow to dry out.
  • Humidity & air: High humidity with constant gentle air movement. Rainwater or RO water preferred.
  • Mounting: Grows well mounted on cork or tree fern, which suits its floriferous clumping habit and shows the flowers to best advantage.
