Masdevallia John Tomaschke 'Deep Purple' is a selected clone of this hybrid between Masdevallia Heathii (M. ignea × M. veitchiana) and Masdevallia discoidea, registered by G.Staal and J.Leathers in 2004. The discoidea influence is immediately apparent — it contributes the intense deep magenta-purple colouring that sets this hybrid apart from the warm orange tones typical of most Heathii crosses. 'Deep Purple' is a sibling to our own 'Lou Reed' clone, selected for its exceptional depth of colour and strong flower presentation. This is a division of that selected clone.
What to expect
- Flowering: Single flowers on erect spikes held clear of the foliage. Can carry multiple spikes simultaneously.
- Flowers: Deep magenta-purple with vivid contrasting yellow tails — a striking combination rarely seen in this genus. Good substance and rich, saturated colour.
- Plant: Compact Masdevallia habit, vigorous. A distinctive addition to any cool-growing collection.
Growing notes
- Temperature: Cool to intermediate. Avoid sustained warmth.
- Light: Bright filtered shade. No direct midday sun.
- Water: Keep evenly moist at all times. No pseudobulbs means no water reserves — do not allow to dry out.
- Humidity & air: High humidity with constant gentle air movement. Rainwater or RO water preferred.
