Masdevallia Kimballiana 'Yellow Doll' HCC/OSCOV

Masdevallia Kimballiana 'Yellow Doll' HCC/OSCOV is an awarded clone of one of the oldest Masdevallia hybrids still actively grown — M. caudata × M. veitchiana, registered by Sanders of St Albans in 1893. Over 130 years later it remains a benchmark cross, valued for its large, elegant flowers and the warm yellow-cream colouring that distinguishes it from the typical orange tones of veitchiana-based hybrids. 'Yellow Doll' received its HCC from the Orchid Societies Council of Victoria, recognising the quality and presentation of its flowers under judging. This is a division of that awarded clone.

What to expect

• Flowering: Single flowers on tall erect spikes held well clear of the foliage. Capable of multiple spikes simultaneously.
• Flowers: Large, elegant pale cream-yellow lateral sepals with delicate yellow-green veining and a contrasting red centre detail. Long, fine yellow tails. Refined and distinctive — quite different in character to the bolder orange hybrids.
• Plant: Compact and vigorous for the genus. A reliable performer in cool-growing conditions.

Growing notes

• Temperature: Cool to intermediate. Both parent species are high-altitude Andean cloud forest plants. Avoid sustained warmth.
• Light: Bright filtered shade. No direct midday sun.
• Water: Keep evenly moist at all times. No pseudobulbs means no water reserves — do not allow to dry out.
• Humidity & air: High humidity with constant gentle air movement. Rainwater or RO water preferred.
