Masdevallia Larissa 'Alabaster' is a selected clone of this P.L. Jackson hybrid (M. coccinea × M. coriacea), registered in 2007. The cross brings together the large upright flowers and strong spike habit of coccinea with the pale, refined colouring of coriacea — producing something quite different from the bold oranges and reds typical of most Masdevallia hybrids. 'Alabaster' has been selected for its exceptional purity of colour and elegant flower presentation. This is a division of that selected clone.
Masdevallia Larissa produces seedlings that range from white through to pink — 'Alabaster' represents the white end of that spectrum, with delicate pink-magenta veining through the centre providing the only contrast against an otherwise pristine flower.
What to expect
- Flowering: Single flowers on erect spikes held clear of the foliage. Can carry multiple spikes simultaneously.
- Flowers: Pure white lateral sepals with delicate pink-magenta veining through the centre and along the dorsal. Long, fine tails tipped yellow-green. Refined and understated — a genuine contrast to the bolder hybrids in any collection.
- Plant: Compact Masdevallia habit, well-suited to cool-growing collections.
Growing notes
- Temperature: Cool to cold. Both parents are high-altitude Colombian and Andean species. Avoid sustained warmth.
- Light: Bright filtered shade. No direct midday sun.
- Water: Keep evenly moist at all times. No pseudobulbs means no water reserves — do not allow to dry out.
- Humidity & air: High humidity with constant gentle air movement. Rainwater or RO water preferred.
