Masdevallia lineolata × tovarensis 'Cloud Nine'

Masdevallia lineolata × tovarensis 'Cloud Nine' is a selected clone from an unregistered primary cross between two white-flowered species. It covers itself in pure white flowers with a pink-purple eye, all around the plant at once, and the spikes rebloom.

About this plant

Masdevallia tovarensis, native to the cloud forests of Venezuela, is one of the more floriferous and approachable species in the genus. Its spikes rebloom successively and can carry multiple flowers at the same time. Masdevallia lineolata, from Colombia, contributes compact habit and refined flower form. 'Cloud Nine' was selected as the standout plant from this cross.

An important cultural note inherited from tovarensis: do not cut the flower spikes when blooming finishes. They will rebloom from the same spike in subsequent seasons.

• Flowering: Multiple flowers carried at once on spikes all around the plant. One of the more floriferous combinations in the cool-growing Masdevallia world.
• Flowers: Pure white and rounded, with a contrasting pink-purple eye at the centre and fine yellow-green tails. Delicate rather than dramatic.
• Plant: Compact and tidy. More forgiving than many Masdevallia, with the tovarensis background lending some additional heat tolerance.

Growing conditions

• Temperature: Cool to intermediate, 5°C – 22°C. Cool nights are required, and it is not suited to warm climates.
• Light: Bright filtered light. No direct sun.
• Water: Keep evenly moist at all times. Do not allow to dry out.
• Humidity & air: 60% or higher, with constant gentle air movement. Rainwater or RO water preferred.
• Spikes: Leave old spikes in place so they can rebloom.
