Masdevallia Machu Picchu 'Crown Point' AM/AOS is a selected clone of this primary hybrid (M. ayabacana × M. coccinea), registered by Beall in 1986. Both parents are high-altitude Andean species — M. ayabacana contributing deep magenta-red tones and rounded sepal form; M. coccinea, the iconic Colombian cloud forest species, contributing its characteristic broad lateral sepals, bold saturated colour, and erect spike habit. 'Crown Point' received an Award of Merit from the American Orchid Society, recognising the exceptional quality of this clone under judging.
What to expect
- Flowering: Single flowers on erect spikes held clear of the foliage. Can carry multiple spikes simultaneously on well-established plants.
- Flowers: Deep saturated magenta with strong substance and a clean form reflecting both parents. The AM/AOS reflects the exceptional quality of this clone under judging.
- Plant: Compact Masdevallia habit, vigorous when cool conditions are met.
Growing notes
- Temperature: Cool to intermediate. Both parents are high-altitude Andean species. Avoid sustained warmth.
- Light: Bright filtered shade. No direct midday sun.
