Masdevallia Machu Picchu ‘Crown Point’ AM/AOS

Masdevallia Machu Picchu 'Crown Point' AM/AOS is a selected clone of this primary hybrid (M. ayabacana × M. coccinea), registered by Beall in 1986. Both parents are high-altitude Andean species. M. ayabacana contributes deep magenta-red tones and rounded sepal form. M. coccinea, the well-known Colombian cloud forest species, contributes broad lateral sepals, bold saturated colour and an erect spike habit. 'Crown Point' received an Award of Merit from the American Orchid Society (AM/AOS).

• Flowering: Single flowers on erect spikes held clear of the foliage. Well-established plants can carry several spikes at once.
• Flowers: Deep saturated magenta with strong substance and a clean form that reflects both parents.
• Plant: Compact Masdevallia habit, vigorous when its cool conditions are met.

Growing conditions

• Temperature: Cool to intermediate, 5°C to 22°C. It needs cool nights and is not suited to warm climates. Avoid sustained warmth.
• Light: Bright filtered light. No direct midday sun.
• Water: Keep evenly moist at all times. It has no pseudobulbs, so do not let it dry out.
• Humidity and air: 60% or higher, with constant gentle air movement. Rainwater or RO water is preferred.
