Masdevallia macrura is a large, robust species from the cloud forests of Colombia and Ecuador, found at elevations of 2,000–2,600 metres and described by Reichenbach in 1874. It's best known for its extraordinary tail length and heavy substance, and has been used repeatedly as a parent in modern Masdevallia hybridising for exactly those traits. 'Gigantica' is a selected clone chosen for size — living up to both the species epithet and the cultivar name.
What to expect
- Flowering: A single flower on an erect to suberect spike.
- Flowers: Large, with elongated tails and heavy substance — among the biggest tails in the genus.
- Plant: Robust and larger-growing than most Masdevallia — give it room to develop.
Growing notes
- Temperature: Cool to cold. A Colombian/Ecuadorian cloud forest species found at 2,000–2,600 m — avoid sustained warmth.
- Light: Bright filtered shade. No direct midday sun.
- Water: Keep evenly moist at all times. No pseudobulbs — do not allow to dry out.
- Humidity & air: High humidity with constant gentle air movement. Rainwater or RO water preferred.
