This cross pairs two species from opposite ends of Masdevallia's range: Masd. maloi, native to Loja province in southern Ecuador, and Masd. rolfeana, native to the windy cloud forests of Costa Rica (1,400–2,200 m). It is an unregistered cross, not a named grex.
About this plant
- Flowers: Magenta-purple lower lobes deepening to a red-orange hooded upper section, with a single long, curving yellow-orange dorsal tail and small dark maroon markings at the throat. One flower per stem, held above the foliage on a slender stem.
Growing conditions
- Temperature: Cool to cold growing, following both parents' cloud forest origins. It suits 3°C to 18°C and needs cool nights. It is not suitable for warm climates.
- Light: Bright filtered shade, no direct midday sun.
- Water: Keep evenly moist at all times. There are no pseudobulbs, so do not allow the plant to dry out.
- Humidity & air: High humidity, 60% or higher, with constant gentle air movement. Rainwater or RO water preferred.
