Masdevallia (maloi × rolfeana) 'Firebird'

This cross pairs two species from opposite ends of Masdevallia's range: Masd. maloi, native to Loja province in southern Ecuador, and Masd. rolfeana, native to the windy cloud forests of Costa Rica (1,400–2,200 m). It is an unregistered cross, not a named grex.

What to expect

• Flowers: Magenta-purple lower lobes deepening to a red-orange hooded upper section, with a single long, curving yellow-orange dorsal tail and small dark maroon markings at the throat. One flower per stem, held above the foliage on a slender stem.

Growing notes

• Temperature: Cool to cold growing, following both parents' cloud forest origins.
• Light: Bright filtered shade, no direct midday sun.
• Water: Keep evenly moist at all times — no pseudobulbs, do not allow to dry out.
• Humidity & air: High humidity with constant gentle air movement. Rainwater or RO water preferred.
