About this plant

Masdevallia Mary Staal is a hybrid registered by Wubben in 1989, a cross of M. triangularis × M. veitchiana. This is the foundational pairing behind much of the warm-orange Masdevallia hybrid work: veitchiana contributes intense orange-red saturation, bold scale and Andean vigour, and triangularis contributes the warm amber-gold tones that soften and enrich the result.

Golden Gate Orchids in San Francisco, long one of the most respected cool-growing specialist nurseries in North America, selected and named 'Golden Gate' for its warm, rich golden colouring and clean form. The flower reads golden-yellow rather than orange, with good substance and an elegant outline.

• Flower spikes: Single flowers on erect spikes held clear of the foliage.
• Flowers: Rich golden-yellow with elongated, tapering sepals and a refined, clean outline. Closer to golden than orange, which makes it a useful contrast to the vivid orange hybrids that dominate this cross.
• Plant: Compact Masdevallia habit, vigorous when cool conditions are met.

Growing conditions

• Climate: Cool to intermediate, with a temperature range of 5°C to 22°C. It needs cool nights and is not suited to warm climates. Avoid sustained warmth.
• Light: Bright filtered light. No direct midday sun.
• Water: Keep evenly moist at all times. It has no pseudobulbs, so do not allow it to dry out.
• Humidity and air: Humidity of 60% or higher, with constant gentle air movement. Rainwater or RO water is preferred.
