Masdevallia Mary Staal ‘Golden Gate’

Masdevallia Mary Staal is a hybrid registered by Wubben in 1989 — a cross of M. triangularis × M. veitchiana. This is the foundational pairing behind much of the warm-orange Masdevallia hybrid work: veitchiana contributing intense orange-red saturation, bold scale, and Andean vigour; triangularis contributing the warm amber-gold tones that soften and enrich the result. The Golden Gate Orchids nursery in San Francisco — long one of the most respected cool-growing specialist nurseries in North America — selected and named 'Golden Gate' for its distinctively warm, rich golden colouring and clean form: a flower that reads golden-yellow rather than orange, with good substance and an elegant outline.

What to expect

• Flowering: Single flowers on erect spikes held clear of the foliage.
• Flowers: Rich golden-yellow with elongated tapering sepals and a refined, clean outline. Distinctly warm in tone — closer to golden than orange, making it a useful contrast to the vivid orange hybrids that dominate this cross.
