Masdevallia Rubicon 'Torbott' HCC/AOC is an awarded clone of this P. Mayhead hybrid (M. coccinea × Masdevallia Heathii), registered in 1988. Rubicon is a well-established grex that has proven itself both as a consistent show winner and as a highly influential parent — it appears in the background of several subsequent award-winning hybrids including Masdevallia Trevor Gillbanks and Masdevallia Semper Fi. 'Torbott' received its HCC from the Australian Orchid Council, recognising the quality and presentation of the flower under formal judging. This is a division of that awarded clone.

What to expect

  • Flowering: Single flowers on tall erect spikes held well clear of the foliage. Can carry multiple spikes simultaneously.
  • Flowers: Large, vivid coral-red with salmon-orange veining radiating across all sepal surfaces and a long dark crimson tail. The coccinea influence is clear in the broad, swept lateral sepals; the Heathii background lifts the colour into warm coral rather than pure red. Refined and elegant — a different character to the densely spotted orange hybrids.
  • Plant: Vigorous and well-proportioned. A strong grower that reflects the quality of both parent lines.

Growing notes

  • Temperature: Cool to cold. Both parents have high-altitude Andean backgrounds. Avoid sustained warmth.
  • Light: Bright filtered shade. No direct midday sun.
  • Water: Keep evenly moist at all times. No pseudobulbs means no water reserves — do not allow to dry out.
  • Humidity & air: High humidity with constant gentle air movement. Rainwater or RO water preferred.

Shipping & condition
