Masdevallia Twinky 'Apricot'

Masdevallia Twinky 'Apricot' is a primary hybrid between M. coccinea and M. citrinella, registered by M. Turkel in 1992. As a direct cross of two species, Twinky sits close to the wild. The coccinea influence dominates the flower form, giving broad, rounded laterals fused into a cupped sepal body. M. citrinella, a small-flowered Ecuadorian species from subsection Oscillantes, contributes the yellow tail tips that set Twinky apart from the typical coccinea colour forms. 'Apricot' has been selected for its warm apricot-salmon ground colour and clean tail expression.

About this plant

• Flowering: Single flowers on erect spikes held clear of the foliage. A well-grown plant will carry multiple spikes at once.
• Flowers: Broad, rounded lateral sepals fused into a full, cupped form, warm apricot-salmon to coral-rose throughout, with subtle deeper pink veining radiating from the centre. The fine papillate surface gives a soft, matte finish. All three tails are clearly expressed: the dorsal long and upswept, the laterals shorter and curving outward, all tipped in clean yellow-gold. This comes from the citrinella parentage and distinguishes it from pure coccinea clones.
• Plant: Compact Masdevallia habit, typical of the coccinea alliance.

Growing conditions

• Temperature: Cool to intermediate, 5°C to 18°C. Both parents are high-altitude Andean and Ecuadorian species. Cool nights are needed, and it is not suited to warm climates. Avoid sustained warmth.
• Light: Bright filtered light. No direct midday sun.
• Water: Keep evenly moist at all times. With no pseudobulbs there are no water reserves, so do not let it dry out.
• Humidity & air: Humidity of 60% or higher, with constant gentle air movement. Rainwater or RO water is preferred.
