Masdevallia Urubamba is a primary hybrid of M. ayabacana × M. veitchiana, registered by Beall in 1986. The grex name is fitting — the Urubamba valley of Peru is the heartland of M. veitchiana, one of the two parent species. Both parents are vivid red Peruvian Andean species, and the result is a deeply saturated crimson flower with the elongated form characteristic of the veitchiana lineage and a rich, velvety texture. Offered as an established division.
What to expect
- Flowering: Single-flowered spikes carried upright and presenting the flower face-forward. Freely flowering when cool conditions are met.
- Flowers: Deep crimson to scarlet-red throughout, with a rich, velvety matte texture. Dorsal sepal forming a narrow elongated hood tapering to a long upward orange-red tail; lateral sepals fusing centrally and tapering to long pendant orange-red tails. The elongated form and deep red saturation reflect the veitchiana parentage clearly. Medium-sized, with strong colour and good substance.
- Plant: Miniature, compact, upright growth. Vigorous when cool conditions are met.
Growing notes
- Temperature: Cool to intermediate. Both parent species are Peruvian Andean species; this hybrid appreciates cool conditions with cool nights. Avoid sustained warmth.
- Light: Bright filtered shade. No direct midday sun.
- Water: Keep evenly moist at all times. No pseudobulbs means no water reserves — do not allow to dry out.
- Humidity & air: High humidity with constant gentle air movement. Rainwater or RO water preferred.
