Masdevallia venusta is a striking species from the cloud forests of northern Peru, found at elevations of around 2,400–2,500 metres and described by Rudolf Schlechter in 1921. It belongs to the same subsection as M. coccinea and M. veitchiana — the hummingbird-pollinated group responsible for some of the boldest colour in the genus. The species has an unusual history: it hasn't been recollected in the wild since its original discovery in the early 1900s, so everything in cultivation today traces back to those first plants.
What to expect
- Flowering: A single large flower held well clear of the foliage on a long, slender, erect spike.
- Flowers: Bold crimson to orange colouring typical of the coccinea group, with good size and substance for a species this compact.
- Plant: Compact, upright growth with a single leathery leaf per growth.
Growing notes
- Temperature: Cool to intermediate. A high-altitude Peruvian cloud forest species — avoid sustained warmth.
- Light: Bright filtered shade. No direct midday sun.
- Water: Keep evenly moist at all times. No pseudobulbs — do not allow to dry out.
- Humidity & air: High humidity with constant gentle air movement. Rainwater or RO water preferred.
