Masdevallia × wubbenii 'Sunny'

Masdevallia × wubbenii is a natural hybrid between M. triangularis and M. wageneriana, found where the two grow together in northern Venezuela at around 2,200 m. Carl Luer described it in 1987. It is a cool-growing miniature that carries its flowers on stems held just above the leaves.

'Sunny' has a pale yellow to cream face finely speckled with magenta-red, the spotting concentrated in a band across the lateral sepals. The dorsal sepal is a deeper yellow with a red central stripe, and all three sepals end in long, slender yellow-green tails.

About this plant

• Flowers: Single flowers around 3 cm across the sepals, plus the tails, on upright stems roughly 6–10 cm long. Flowers in spring.
• Plant: Miniature, clumping habit with slender stems and a single upright leaf on each growth.

Growing conditions

• Temperature: Cool, 3°C – 18°C. Both parents are Andean cloud forest species. It needs cool nights and is not suited to warm climates, so avoid sustained warmth.
• Light: Bright filtered light, no direct midday sun.
• Water: Keep evenly moist at all times. There are no pseudobulbs, so do not allow it to dry out.
• Humidity & air: Humidity of 60% or higher, with constant gentle air movement. Rainwater or RO water preferred.
