Masdevallia Hurdy Gurdy ‘Beenak’ HCC/OSCOV

Masdevallia Hurdy Gurdy is a P.L. Jackson hybrid registered in 1996 — a cross of Masdevallia Sundancer × M. veitchiana. Sundancer (M. triangularis × M. veitchiana) contributes warm golden-orange tones and good spike habit; the second veitchiana in the pedigree concentrates the species' characteristic orange intensity and bold substance. Hurdy Gurdy is a well-regarded show grex — large, warm orange flowers with strong form and reliable flowering. 'Beenak' was selected from Belgrave Orchids' own plants and received a Highly Commended Certificate from the OSCOV, recognising its consistent quality and presentation under judging.

What to expect

• Flowering: Single flowers on erect spikes held clearly above the foliage. Can carry multiple spikes simultaneously on well-established plants.
• Flowers: Large, warm orange flowers with strong substance and clean proportional balance. The concentrated veitchiana pedigree delivers good scale and colour saturation — a reliable, impactful show flower.
• Plant: Compact Masdevallia habit, vigorous when cool conditions are met.

• Temperature: Cool to intermediate. Avoid sustained warmth.
• Light: Bright filtered shade. No direct midday sun.
• Water: Keep evenly moist at all times. No pseudobulbs — do not allow to dry out.
• Humidity & air: High humidity with constant gentle air movement. Rainwater or RO water preferred.
