What they're for

Any orchid seedling coming out of flask needs time to adjust to open conditions. The transition from the sterile, humidity-controlled environment of a flask to a shadehouse or growing bench is one of the highest-risk points in a young plant's life. A humidity dome bridges that gap — maintaining the moisture the seedling was raised in while it establishes roots in its first growing medium.

The 160mm size is particularly suited to community pots — a comm pot is a group of seedlings from the same flask potted together into a single container, rather than individually. Growing as a community lets seedlings stabilise together and share the microclimate before being separated later. The extra volume also suits larger deflask batches or seedlings that need an extended period under the dome before they're ready for open conditions. Once plants are actively rooting and pushing consistent new growth, the dome comes off and they move into standard growing conditions.
